    What is Oxymatrine?

Oxymatrine is a naturally occurring quinolizidine alkaloid with significant biological activity. It is primarily found in various plants of the genus Sophora in the Leguminosae family, including Sophora flavescens (Ait.), Sophora tonkinensis Gagnep (S. tonkinensis Gagnep), Sophora alopecuroides (S. alopecuroides L.), and Sophora viciifolia Hance. Its molecular structure is characterized by a nitrogen atom bound to an oxygen atom via a coordination bond.

This compound exhibits a wide range of pharmacological activities, including anti-inflammatory, analgesic, antiarrhythmic, antitussive, and antibacterial effects. Notably, oxymatrine and matrine can be interconverted under specific conditions: oxymatrine's nitrogen-oxygen bond breaks and converts to matrine.

In addition to pharmaceutical applications, matrine alkaloids also have important agricultural applications, serving as a control for a variety of pests, including pine caterpillars, tea caterpillars, and cabbage loopers, exhibiting multiple functions, including insecticides, fungicides, and plant growth regulators.

    What are the benefits?

    Antibacterial and Anti-inflammatory Benefits

Oxymatrine exhibits broad-spectrum antibacterial properties, working through a dual mechanism: inhibiting bacterial biosynthesis and interfering with its biooxidative processes. Its anti-inflammatory mechanisms include stabilizing red blood cell membranes and modulating immune cell function, effectively alleviating skin inflammations such as eczema and dermatitis, and reducing itching. As one of the three major botanical soothing agents in the skincare industry (along with licorice extract and scutellaria baicalensis extract), it is widely used in anti-acne and anti-inflammatory cosmetics.

    Anti-allergic Properties

This ingredient specifically inhibits IgE-mediated histamine release from mast cells, effectively relieving physical, chemical, and neuropathic pain, and improving skin discomfort caused by allergies.

    Whitening Effects

By inhibiting tyrosinase activity, oxymatrine blocks the melanin production pathway, reducing photoaging-related hyperpigmentation and achieving a significant whitening effect.

    Anti-Wrinkle Effects

Oxymatrine has lower cytotoxicity than retinol, inhibits collagenase activity, and promotes collagen synthesis, effectively improving the appearance of wrinkles.

    Hair growth promotion

As an efficient antibacterial agent, oxymatrine can promote hair follicle circulation and new hair growth. When used in combination with other Chinese herbal medicines, it can exert comprehensive effects such as anti-inflammation, promoting microcirculation and cell regeneration, providing comprehensive support for scalp health.

    Immune regulation

By bidirectionally regulating the functions of immune cells, it can not only enhance the defense ability but also suppress excessive reactions, achieving precise immune balance regulation.

    Antimicrobial effects:

    (1) Antibacterial: Specifically interfere with bacterial protein synthesis and inhibit the proliferation of pathogenic bacteria.

    (2) Antiviral: Block the virus invasion and replication process.

    (3) Anti-inflammatory: Inhibit the release of inflammatory mediators and alleviate tissue inflammatory responses.

    Application direction

    Health Foods

Oxymatrine, as a natural functional ingredient, can effectively enhance the physiological regulatory properties of health foods. Its unique biological activity makes it a high-quality additive for enhancing the health value of products, providing consumers with additional health benefits.

    Cosmetics

Due to its excellent antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties, oxymatrine is widely used in skincare formulations. This ingredient can add an additional dimension to various skincare products, significantly improving their effectiveness and value by reducing oxidative stress and inflammation.
