Bovine Bile Powder: A Traditional Chinese Medicine

Bovine bile powder is a dried product made from the bile of the bovine animal (Bos taurus domesticus Gmelin) through filtration and drying. The finished product is a greenish-brown to brownish-red block or powder, some parts of which are translucent and horny. It has a bitter taste, a slightly fishy odor, and is hygroscopic.

In traditional Chinese medicine theory, bovine bile powder is cold in nature and enters the liver, gallbladder, and lung meridians. It has the effects of clearing the liver and improving eyesight, promoting bile secretion and bowel movement, detoxifying and reducing swelling. It is commonly used for symptoms such as red and swollen eyes, sore throat, cough with phlegm and heat, constipation due to heat accumulation, and carbuncles and boils.

Modern research shows that its main active ingredients are bile acids (such as cholic acid and taurocholic acid), and it also contains bile pigments, mucin, fatty acids, and trace elements. These components promote fat emulsification and digestion, stimulate bile secretion, regulate intestinal function, and also show potential in anti-inflammatory and antibacterial effects.

    I. Main Efficacy

Clearing Heat and Detoxifying: Helps clear internal heat and toxins, reducing inflammation and swelling. Commonly used for fever, sore throat, and skin sores.

Promoting Bile Secretion: Helps the liver produce more bile, aiding in fat digestion and providing some assistance in the prevention and excretion of gallstones.

Aiding Bowel Movements:Stimulates intestinal peristalsis, relieving constipation and dry stools.

Clearing Liver and Improving Vision:Improves red, swollen, and painful eyes caused by "liver fire."

Assisting in Hemostasis:Has a certain hemostatic effect, helping to relieve minor internal bleeding.

Expelling Parasites:Traditionally used to expel intestinal parasites.

    II. Common Uses

Used for Gallbladder-Related Problems: Such as pain caused by cholecystitis and gallstones, indigestion, etc.

    Supplementary information: Production method

A method for producing ox bile powder, the process steps are as follows:

Step 1: Boiling: After the ox bile is broken and filtered, it is added to a heated pot and boiled.

Step 2: Degreasing: During the boiling process, when the temperature in the pot reaches 20℃-30℃, hydrogen peroxide is slowly added sequentially, and the resulting oily foam is skimmed off.

Step 3: Filtration: The mixture obtained after degreasing is placed in a centrifuge for filtration.

Step 4: Drying: After filtration, it is boiled again in a heated pot to obtain dried ox bile.

Step 5: Grinding: The dried ox bile is ground into powder particles of different mesh sizes as needed.

    Beneficial Effects:

    1. In the second step of the boiling process, hydrogen peroxide is added when the pot temperature reaches 20℃-30℃. The resulting scum is skimmed off, removing the grease from the cow bile and resulting in a higher and purer cow bile powder.

    2. During the second step of the boiling process, when adding hydrogen peroxide to the pot at 20℃-30℃, it is not added all at once, but slowly and in several portions. This allows the hydrogen peroxide to react fully, resulting in a higher degreasing rate.

    3. Centrifugal filtration ensures more thorough filtration of the cow bile.
