    What is tranexamic acid?

Tranexamic acid was originally used clinically as a hemostatic agent, inhibiting fibrinolysis and thus achieving hemostasis. Later, it was discovered to have a role in improving skin pigmentation. Tranexamic acid was subsequently incorporated into skincare products for whitening and freckle reduction, gradually becoming a key ingredient in these markets.

    Mechanism of Action

Tranexamic acid is a protease inhibitor. Its primary mechanism of action is to interfere with melanin production at the front end and to prevent the transport and diffusion of already produced melanin at the back end. Tranexamic acid inhibits prostaglandin E2 (which is released by keratinocytes in response to UV radiation and activates melanin formation), thus inhibiting melanin production at the very front end. Protease-activated receptor 2 (PAR-2) in keratinocytes promotes the diffusion of melanin to surrounding cells, leading to pigmentation and skin darkening. Tranexamic acid inhibits the expression of this receptor, thereby preventing the transport and diffusion of melanin, exerting its whitening effect at the back end.

In short, tranexamic acid's whitening and spot-lightening effects work by inhibiting melanin production and preventing the transfer of existing melanin to surrounding cells, preventing dark spots from expanding or multiplying. However, it does not accelerate melanin metabolism or shedding. Therefore, the whitening effects of tranexamic acid alone may not be immediate, often requiring extended use (up to a month) to be effective. For optimal results, it needs to be combined with other ingredients.

    Characteristics of Tranexamic Acid

The reason why Tranexamic Acid is widely used is inseparable from its many characteristics. The whitening ingredient niacinamide is easily converted into irritating niacin under certain conditions, and vitamin C is sensitive to light and can only exert its best effect under weak acidic conditions (pH ≈ 5.5). However, there are almost no restrictions on the use of Tranexamic Acid, which is mainly reflected in the following aspects:

    (1) It is mild and non-irritating, has good stability, is resistant to acid and alkali, is not easily affected by temperature and environment, does not require carrier protection, and is not easily affected by drug delivery systems.

    (2) It is easily absorbed by the skin: Tranexamic acid has a very small molecular weight and is easily absorbed through the skin. It can directly reach the basal layer of the skin, inhibit the production of melanin, and achieve the purpose of whitening, lightening spots, and improving dull skin.

    (3) Reliable safety and effectiveness

Tranexamic acid is safe and non-irritating to the skin. It was developed from a hemostatic drug. There is sufficient clinical research data. The efficacy of whitening, lightening spots, preventing and treating chloasma, dark spots, and freckles has been confirmed.

    Tranexamic Acid's Skincare Benefits

In skincare, tranexamic acid primarily provides whitening and spot-lightening benefits, as well as anti-inflammatory and soothing properties, and as an anti-aging aid.

    Whitening and Spot-Lightening

Inhibiting Melanin Production: By blocking UV-activated melanocyte signals, it reduces tyrosinase activity, thereby reducing melanin production at the source.

Blocking Melanin Transport: Interfering with the transfer of melanin from melanocytes to the epidermis, preventing pigmentation.

Lightening Existing Spots: Significantly improves melasma, acne scars, and UV-induced hyperpigmentation.

    Anti-Inflammatory and Soothing

Tranexamic acid has anti-inflammatory properties that can alleviate redness and sensitivity, making it particularly suitable for inflammatory skin types such as rosacea and acne-prone skin. It also reduces hyperpigmentation caused by inflammation (such as red acne scars).

    Anti-Aging Benefits

By improving uneven skin tone and dullness, it creates a more luminous, youthful-looking appearance, indirectly enhancing overall skin texture.

    Applications of Tranexamic Acid

    Medical Field

    Hemostasis

Tranexamic acid is a classic hemostatic agent that reduces bleeding risk by inhibiting the activation of plasminogen activator. It is commonly used in surgical procedures, traumatic bleeding, postpartum hemorrhage, and other settings, and is widely used in clinical emergency care.

    Treatment of Melasma

Tranexamic acid effectively lightens melasma. By inhibiting melanin production and transport, it improves pigmentation symptoms, making it a commonly used treatment for melasma.

    Inflammatory Diseases

It has anti-inflammatory properties and can be used to treat inflammatory diseases such as chronic urticaria, while also alleviating post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation.

    Skincare

Tranexamic acid is often added to whitening creams, serums, concentrates, gels, and whitening toners.

    Whitening and Spot Reduction

It inhibits tyrosinase activity, reduces melanin production, and prevents the spread of melanin to surrounding cells. Long-term use can reduce freckles, sun spots, melasma, and improve uneven skin tone.

    Anti-Redness Repair

Regulates vasodilation and reduces skin redness. Suitable for rosacea, sensitive skin, and other redness-prone skin conditions, while also promoting skin barrier repair.

    Post-Operation Care

Used after laser, photon, or other cosmetic procedures, this product can inhibit re-pigmentation, accelerate skin recovery, and reduce post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation.
